The Rev. Robert P. Maloney, Vincentian Superior General, To Discuss Higher Education In The New Millenium At DePaul May 10

The Rev. Robert P. Maloney, C.M., Superior General of the Congregation of the Mission and the Daughters of Charity, will deliver a lecture on "Vincentian Higher Education in the New Millennium" at 4 p.m. May 10 in DePaul University’s Cortelyou Commons Building, 2324 N. Fremont Ave. The event is free, open to the public and will be followed by a reception.

The address is part of the Centennial Laureate Lecture series sponsored by DePaul to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the university’s founding by the Congregation of the Mission, a Catholic religious order. Headquartered in Paris and commonly known as the Vincentians, the order was established by St. Vincent de Paul, a 17th century French priest. His values--respect for individual dignity and dedication to public service--shape Vincentian-affiliated educational institutions.

Maloney’s remarks will focus on the future of higher education at the three American Vincentian universities: DePaul, St. John’s University in Jamaica, N.Y., and Niagara University in Niagara, N.Y. DePaul recently became the largest of all Catholic universities in the United States with an enrollment of 18,565, followed in second place by St. John’s with an enrollment of 18,336. Niagara is a smaller liberal arts university.

Maloney was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and currently works in Rome. He has penned three books with New City Press: "Seasons of Spirituality," "The Way of Vincent de Paul," and "He Hears the Cry of the Poor." His writings focus on moral theology and spirituality.
