Feminist Author Barbara Smith To Speak At DePaul April 15

Noted feminist author Barbara Smith will give a lecture at DePaul University on "The Truth that Never Hurts: 30 Years of Activism for Justice and Social Change," April 15 at 7 p.m. in Schmitt Academic Center, 2320 N. Kenmore Ave., Room 154.

Smith, politically active since the 1960s, will read from her new book of essays entitled "The Truth that Never Hurts: Writings on Race, Gender and Freedom." Smith has edited three major collections about Black women including the much heralded "Home Girls: A Black Feminist Anthology" (1982). She is an editor of "The Reader’s Companion to U.S. Women’s History with Wilma Mankiller, Gwendolyn Mink, Marysa Navarro and Gloria Steinem" (Houghton Mifflin, 1998).

Perhaps Smith is best known for co-founding Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, the first publishing house for women of color in the United States. She holds a master’s degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh and divides her time between publishing and lecturing. She is the recipient of the Stonewall Award for service to the lesbian and gay community, which is awarded by the Anderson Prize Foundation.

The lecture, free and open to the public, is sponsored in part by DePaul’s Women’s Studies program and a number of university centers and organizations. For more information call Women’s Studies at 773/325-4500.
