Appellate Court Justice Anne Burke Joins DePaul Board Of Trustees

Illinois Appellate Court Justice Anne Marie Burke has been elected to DePaul University’s Board of Trustees by the Members of the Corporation. Burke is one of four new trustees joining the board this spring.

Burke, 55, a resident of the Southwest Side, earned her bachelor’s degree from DePaul’s School for New Learning in 1976 and her law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1983. Her husband, Chicago Ald. Edward M. Burke (14th), also graduated from DePaul, earning a law degree from the College of Law in 1968.

Anne Burke began her career as a Chicago Park District teacher and consultant from 1965 to 1970. She co-founded the Chicago Special Olympics in 1968. After a period of raising children and attending college, Burke started a private law practice on the South Side where she worked from 1983 to 1994. She served as an Illinois Court of Claims judge from 1987 until 1994, when Gov. James Edgar appointed her special counsel to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. In 1995, she was appointed to the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, Fourth Division, and was elected to the court in 1996.

"Anne Burke has demonstrated a strong commitment to DePaul, having served on the School for New Learning Advisory Council and the DePaul Women’s Board," said Edward A. Brennan, chairman of DePaul’s Board of Trustees. "We welcome her further contributions as a trustee."

Also joining the board: Pamela Strobel, executive vice president of Unicom, Eugene Delaney, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola’s Global Telecom Solutions Group, and

Ernesto Nieto, founder and director of the National Hispanic Institute.
