More Than 100 Tuba And Trombone Players Unite On Nov. 6 For Low Brass Day At DePaul University

More than 100 professional, student and amateur tuba and trombone players from the Midwest are expected to participate in a daylong brass workshop Nov. 6 at DePaul University.

Low Brass Day will include master classes and performances with DePaul School of Music brass faculty members from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the DePaul Concert Hall, 804 W. Belden Ave.

"This event is a chance for low brass players of all ages and levels of experience to learn from each other and DePaul music faculty members who perform professionally," said Floyd Cooley, a DePaul School of Music faculty member who is organizing the event.

Cooley has been the principal tuba player for the San Francisco Symphony since 1969 and is a soloist on the CD "The Romantic Tuba." A resident of San Francisco, Cooley has taught at DePaul since 1993, flying to Chicago approximately every third weekend to teach the school's tuba students. The long treks are worth it, Cooley said, because of DePaul's highly talented music students. This fall, Cooley is staying in Chicago as a faculty member in residence at the School of Music, where he is teaching four additional courses.

Three other DePaul brass faculty members will join Cooley in presenting the workshop: Charles Vernon, bass trombonist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Mark Fisher, trombonist with the Chicago Lyric Opera and principal trombonist with the Sante Fe Opera; and Thomas Matta, an active bass trombone player who has performed all over North America and Europe.

Low brass players who wish to participate in the workshop must submit an audition tape and a $25 registration fee. For more information, call 773/325-7260.
