The Theatre School New Directors Series Presents Joe Sutton's Voir Dire, Directed By John Quinn, October 22-31

The New Directors Series of The Theatre School, DePaul University, announces free performances of Joe Sutton's VOIR DIRE, directed by John Quinn in partial fulfillment of requirements for The Theatre School's Master of Fine Arts degree in Directing. The play features scenic design by Jill Kerwin, costume design by Alison Gerke and lighting design by Steve Conway.

Performances of Voir Dire run October 22 - 31, 1999 (previews 10/20 & 10/21). Performances are Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. at the Athenaeum Stage Three, 2936 N. Southport Ave., Chicago. There will be a post-show discussion on Thursday, October 28. Performances are free and open to the public. For reservations, call (312) 922-1999.

In Joe Sutton's revealing portrayal of America's justice system, a prominent black man is arrested for buying crack. His lawyer claims he was framed, set up by the arresting officer. It is left to a jury of six to decide who is telling the truth. This they do over three brutal, often explosive days of harrowing deliberation, as we look behind the one door that will always remain closed to us — the door to the
jury room.

"Law has always fascinated me," says director John Quinn. "This play shows us the reality that in a society as diverse as our own, a ‘jury of one’s own peers’ as it was originally envisioned has become an impossibility."

Director JOHN QUINN is in the 3rd year of the M.F.A. Directing Program at The Theatre School. Originally from Grand Rapids, Mich., he received his B.A. in Psychology and Theatre from the University of Dayton and then flirted with the idea of attending law school before settling on a directing career. His directing credits include Glengarry Glen Ross; A Few Good Men; Words, Words, Words; Philadelphia; Tom and Jerry; The House of Yes; Deathtrap and Five Women Wearing the Same Dress.
