Human Rights Series to Feature The Rev. John T. Pawlikowski

Noted Author and Educator to Discuss Human Rights and the Holocaust

The Rev. John T. Pawlikowski, a professor of social ethics at the Catholic Theological Union, will be the featured speaker for DePaul University's Memory and Conscience series, sponsored by the International Human Rights Law Institute. Pawlikowski will present his lecture, "Liberal Democracy, Human Rights and the Holocaust" at 1:30 p.m., Feb. 17, in DePaul Center, 1 E. Jackson Blvd., Room 8005.

Pawlikowski is co-chairman of the National Polish American-Jewish American Council, a member of the Advisory Committee on Catholic-Jewish Relations of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, and a member of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council in Washington, D. C. He also serves as chairman of the Holocaust Council's Committee on Church Relations and is a member of the Council's Executive Committee.

Pawlikowski was first appointed to this presidential council, which oversees the work of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, by President Jimmy Carter. He has been re-appointed to the Holocaust Council by Presidents Bush and Clinton.

Pawlikowski, is also the author of 10 books and of numerous articles and essays which have appeared in journals such as "Theology Today" and "The Christian Century." Pawlikowski is also a member of the editorial boards of several distinguished journals such as the "Journal of Holocaust and Genocide Studies" and the "Journal of Ecumenical Studies."

DePaul started its Memory and Conscience series in 1996 to provide a forum for the university and the greater Chicago area to participate in discussions offered by noted experts and survivors of historical events with distinct human rights overtones. The series is ongoing.

Past series speakers have included, Miles Lerman, chairman of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum; Wladyslaw Bartoszewski, former Polish foreign minister and Auschwitz survivor; and Michael Berenbaum, president and CEO of the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation.
