Rev. Charles F. Shelby, C.M., Elected to DePaul Board of Trustees

The Rev. Charles Shelby, 57, director and chief financial officer of the Association of the Miraculous Medal in Perryville, Mo., and an alumnus of DePaul University, was elected to DePaul's Board of Trustees by the Members of the Corporation. He is one of five new trustees announced at the board’s May 21 meeting.

"Rev. Shelby brings a dual perspective to the board as a distinguished alumnus and a priest of the Vincentian order--the order that founded DePaul 100 years ago," said Edward A. Brennan, chairman of DePaul's Board of Trustees. "His voice and counsel will be invaluable."

Shelby has directed the Association of the Miraculous Medal since 1983. The association, an apostolate of the Midwest Province of the Congregation of the Mission, strives to spread devotion to the Virgin Mary and support the works of the Congregation. Prior to assuming the role of director, he served as associate director for three years.

He is active in Perryville affairs, serving as treasurer of the Ministerial Alliance and as a member of the Perryville Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the finance committee and is chair of the investment commission of the Congregation of the Mission Midwest Province. He lives in St. Mary's of the Barrens, formerly a Vincentian seminary in Perryville.

Before joining the association, Shelby taught at St. Mary's Seminary in Perryville for six years and spent two years as an administrator and faculty member of St. Vincent's Seminary in Montebello, Calif. He was born in Los Angeles.

Shelby was ordained in 1968 as a Roman Catholic priest. He earned a master's degree in physics from DePaul University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1972.

Shelby currently serves as board chair of the National Catholic Development Conference, the largest association of Catholic fund-raising organizations in the United States.

He also is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Management Association and the Advertising Mail Marketing Association.

The other four new board members are: Mary Dempsey, a DePaul law school alumna and commissioner of the Chicago Public Libraries; John W. Martin Jr., a DePaul liberal arts and law graduate who is vice president and general counsel at the Ford Motor Co.; Susan S. Moody, executive vice president for corporate banking at First Chicago NBD Corp.; and Errol L. Stone, a Chicago attorney.
