DePaul University Invites Public To Centennial Events
DePaul University will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the university’s founding during the 1998-99 school year with a series of celebratory, academic and community service events that begin this fall. Upcoming centennial-related events open to the public include:
Sept. 10: DePaul University’s 100th Birthday Party in the Loop will begin at 11:30 a.m. with an honorary street renaming and sign unveiling at the southeast corner of Jackson and State. A party on the plaza of the DePaul Center, 1 E. Jackson Blvd., follows, with a birthday salute at 11:45 a.m., Eli’s cheesecake, prizes and live music. Free. Call 312/362-8253.
Sept. 10: DePaul University’s Center for Church/State Studies sponsors the first in a series of centennial breakfast lectures at 8 a.m. in the Union League Club of Chicago, 65 W. Jackson Blvd. "The Protestant Nation: Protestant Understandings of the Relationship of Church and State" will be presented by University of Chicago Professor Emeritus Martin E. Marty, author of "Under God, Indivisible." Free, but reservations are required. Call 312/362-8818.
Sept 17: Internationally known economist and philosopher Amartya Sen, Master of Trinity College in Cambridge, England, will deliver an address, "Justice Across Borders" at 3:30 p.m. in Room 8005 of DePaul Center, 1 E. Jackson Blvd. His address will focus on effective means for countries, organizations and individuals to encourage justice worldwide. A reception follows the address. The event is sponsored by DePaul’s Economics Department and is a Centennial Laureate Lecture. Free, but reservations required. Call 312/362-5678.
Sept. 25: DePaul University will unveil new artwork, open a St. Vincent de Paul exhibit and host a book signing to celebrate the university’s centennial in the John T. Richardson Library, 2350 N. Kenmore Ave. At 4 p.m., a bust of St. Vincent will be unveiled in the lobby and an exhibit of his belonging will be opened. At 4:30 p.m., a reception and book signing will be held with the authors of "DePaul University: Centennial Essays and Issues," a new book chronicling the 100-year history of the university. Sept. 25: DePaul University’s Art Gallery will hold a public reception to celebrate the opening of its new space and fall exhibit from 5-7 p.m. in the new gallery, first floor, South Wing of the John T. Richardson Library, 2350 N. Kenmore Ave. The exhibit, "The Natural Order of Things: Visualizing Evolutionary Theory," a collection of botanical and animal prints and plant models, runs through December 11. Free. Sept. 27: Daniel Goldin, NASA administrator, will deliver the keynote address at a dedication ceremony for DePaul University’s William G. McGowan Biological and Environmental Sciences Center at 3 p.m. at the new building, 2335 N. Clifton Ave., on DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus. A reception follows in the new building. Free. Oct. 1: Stephen Jay Gould, a professor of zoology and geology at Harvard University and winner of a National Book Critic’s Circle Award for "The Mismeasure of Man," will deliver a lecture on "Wonderful Life in a Full House: The Surprising Pattern of Life’s History," at 7 p.m., in St. Vincent’s Church, 1010 W. Webster Ave. The event is part of DePaul University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences centennial salute to the sciences program and a Centennial Laureate lecture. Free, but tickets are required. Oct. 2-3: DePaul University’s School of Accountancy will co-sponsor "Global Advances in International Accounting Research," a gathering of accounting scholars from around the world, at the DePaul Center, 1 E. Jackson Blvd. The conference is a joint gathering of the International Association for Accounting Education and Research’s biennial conference and the 33rd annual meeting of the University of Illinois’ Center for International Education and Research in Accounting. Oct. 15: DePaul University’s Center for Church/State Studies sponsors the second in series of centennial breakfast lectures at 8 a.m. in the Union League Club of Chicago, 65 W. Jackson Blvd. "A Roman Catholic Understanding of the Relationship Between Church and State," will be presented by the Rev. Robert F. Drinan, a Jesuit priest and Georgetown University professor of law. Free, but reservations are required. Call 312/362-8818.
Oct. 15: DePaul University volunteers, led by the student chapter of Habitat for Humanity, will join a groundbreaking ceremony on a new two-flat at 3800 W. Lexington Street. The home will be constructed in collaboration with West Side Habitat for Humanity. Time TBA. Sponsored by DePaul and Maxwell House, the six-month home building project is a celebration of DePaul’s centennial and community service mission. Free. Oct. 28: Leading business ethics scholar Kenneth Goodpaster will conduct a workshop on ethics education, "Beyond Ethics 101: The Integration of Ethics in the Curriculum," at 3 p.m. in Room 8005 of DePaul Center, 1 E. Jackson Blvd. The workshop is $10 in advance or $20 at the door. At 7 p.m. in the DePaul Center concourse, Goodpaster will deliver the Fourth Annual Public Service Graduate Program Lecture, "Conscience and its Counterfeits in Organizational Life," on how to incorporate conscience in organizations. The lecture is free. Sponsored by DePaul University’s Institute for Business and Professional Ethics and the Public Services Graduate Program. Registration is requested for either event. Oct. 29: "Values Across the Century," a benefit gala for DePaul University’s Institute for Business and Professional Ethics, will be held at 6 p.m. at 320 S. Plymouth Court. A short play, "Working Ourselves to Death," by Aaron Freeman, Al Gini and Belinda Bremner, will be performed. Ethics awards will be presented to Deloitte & Touche and Wicklander Printing.
