Rev. Austin F. Minogue, C.M., 85 Former DePaul University Administrator And Golf Coach, Dies

The Rev. Austin Minogue, C.M., a former administrator and golf coach at DePaul University and the cousin of university president John P. Minogue, C.M., died Sunday at the Little Sisters of the Poor retirement home in Chicago after a long illness. He was 85.

A native of the Northwest Side of Chicago, Father Austin Minogue served in a variety of roles at DePaul during his tenure of more than 30 years at the institution. He came to the university in 1956 as director of student activities and served in that position until 1978, when he became associate director of development. He also was head coach of the DePaul golf team from its inception in 1958 until 1979, and again from 1984 until 1993. The team won seven of eight Chicagoland Collegiate Golf Conference championships during Minogue’s second tenure as coach. In 1991, Minogue was inducted into DePaul’s Sports Hall of Fame.

"He was a very affable and gracious person," said Rev. Thomas Munster, C.M., DePaul associate chancellor. "He was very well liked."

Father Austin Minogue’s brother, Gene T. Minogue, said "one of the big things I remember most about him is he couldn’t say ‘no’ to people. Any request, for baptisms or communions, he would always say yes and go to their church and do it. He was always there."

Father Austin Minogue attended St. Vincent’s College in Cape Girardeau, Mo., from 1931 to 33, and completed his collegiate and theological education for the priesthood at St. Mary’s Seminary in Perryville, Mo. He was ordained a priest in 1941.

Minogue is survived by his brother, Gene, 12 nephews and nieces and 37 grand nephews and nieces.

Visitation for Father Minogue will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 3:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at St. Vincent’s Church, 1010 W. Webster Ave. A Mass will follow at 7:30 p.m. at St. Vincent’s. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at All Saints Cemetery, 700 N. River Rd., in Des Plaines.
