Chicago String Quartet Performs with Bassist Peter Lloyd Nov. 2, 1998

CSQ’s Three Concert DePaul Series Also Includes Jan. 18 and March 1 Performances

The Chicago String Quartet, in residence at DePaul University’s School of Music, will open its 1998-99 season on Nov. 2 with a concert featuring Quintet in G Major for Strings, Op. 77 by Dvorak, performed with guest artist Peter Lloyd, principal bassist of the Minnesota Orchestra. The program also features Two Waltzes for Strings by Dvorak, Tango by Piazzolla, and Quartet in F major by Ravel.

The concert is the first of three the quartet will perform this season at the DePaul Concert Hall, 800 W. Belden Ave., to benefit the DePaul School of Music scholarship fund. Subsequent concerts in the series will be performed on Jan. 18 and March 1. All concerts begin at 8 p.m.

Peter Lloyd has held the position of principal bassist with the Minnesota Orchestra since 1986. A native of Philadelphia, he is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and The Settlement Music School, having studied with Roger Scott and Eligio Rossi. Upon graduation from Curtis, he immediately joined The Philadelphia Orchestra, remaining a member there for more than eight seasons before accepting his present position in Minnesota.

Lloyd, who has dedicated much of his career to the chamber music repertoire, is a regular participant at The Marlboro Chamber Music Festival, Bravo! Colorado Festival, Music from Angel Fire, The Brandenburg Ensemble, Barge Music in New York City, and The Mainly Mozart Festival. His concerts with these groups have taken him throughout North America, Europe and the Far East. In addition to his concert schedule, Lloyd teaches privately and has given master classes and lectures at many of the leading music schools in the United States.

The program for the Chicago String Quartet’s second concert in the series on Jan. 18 includes Quartet No. 5 in A major , Op. 18, No. 5, by Beethoven; Quartet No. 4, Op. 91, by Bartók; and Quartet No. 1 in E minor, "From My Life," by Smetana.

At the final concert on March 1, the quartet will perform Quartet in B minor, Op. 33, No. 1, by Haydn; Black Angels by Crumb, and Quartet No. 15 in A minor, Op. 132, by Beethoven.

In addition to the series, the quartet has signed with Musician Corporate Management of White Plaines, N.Y., and has begun making plans to tour nationally during the next two years.

The four members of the quartet--Joseph Genualdi, first violin, Stefan Hersh, second violin, Rami Solomonow, viola, and Christopher Costanza, cello—are professors at DePaul’s School of Music.

"We’re excited about touring the West Coast this fall and are planning national and international tours beginning in the summer of 1999," Hersh said. He said the quartet also will succeed the American String Quartet as the quartet in residence at the prestigious Taos School of Music, in Taos, N.M. for six weeks of teaching and playing during the summer of 1999.

Subscription tickets for all three of the Chicago String Quartet’s performances at the DePaul Concert Hall are $60 per person. Single concert tickets are $25 per person. Discounts are available for senior citizens and students. For tickets and information, call 312/922-1999.
