Actor and Screen Actors Guild president, Richard Masur, and attorney John H. Lavely, Jr. of the law firm Lavely & Singer, will lead a discussion about the legal aspects of celebrity at DePaul University on Oct. 14. The program, which will be held in the Egan Urban Center, 243 S. Wabash Ave., Suite 9000 at 4:30 p.m., is part an intellectual property series at the DePaul University College of Law that is sponsored by the Niro Scavone Haller & Niro law firm.
The lecture will address perspectives on the legal notion of the right of publicity, which is designed to prevent the unauthorized commercial exploitation of celebrity personas, and explore the right celebrities have to control their image.
Masur, who is serving his second term as president of the Guild, has enjoyed a 25-year performing career. He has starred in more than 35 feature films, including "Forget Paris," "Multiplicity," "Risky Business," "My Girl," "Heavens Gate" and "Under Fire." His television film credits include "Adam," "Fallen Angel," "When the Bough Breaks" and "The Burning Bed." He has starred in popular television series such as "One Day at a Time" and "Picket Fences" In his most recent television appearance, he starred in the Fox TV series "Significant Others."
Masur also has become a notable director. His first project, "Love Struck," a 23-minute film that he both wrote and directed, was nominated for an Academy Award for best live action short film. His next effort, "Torn Between Two Fathers," an Afterschool Special, gained him a nomination for the prestigious Directors Guild of America Award. He has also directed episodes of TVs "The Wonder Years" and "Picket Fences."
Lavely is the senior partner of Lavely & Singer located in Sun City, Calif. He specializes in business litigation with a particular emphasis in defamation, privacy, intellectual property and entertainment industry disputes.
