DePaul University Music Calendar

Jan. 18: The Chicago String Quartet, in residence at DePaul University, will perform Quartet No.

5 in A major , Op. 18, No. 5, by Beethoven; Quartet No. 4, Op. 91, by Bartók; and Quartet No. 1 in E minor, "From My Life," by Smetana. The concert, featuring quartet members Joseph Genualdi, first violin, Stefan Hersh, second violin, Rami Solomonow, viola, and Christopher Costanza, cello, begins at 8 p.m. at the DePaul Concert Hall, 800 W. Belden Ave., and is a benefit forthe DePaul School of Music scholarship fund. Tickets are $25 each. Discounts available for students, senior citizens, and others. Call (312) 922-1999.

Feb. 5 and 6 at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 7 at 2 p.m.: The DePaul Opera Theatre (DOT) will present Mozart’s "The Magic Flute" for three performances in English at DePaul’s Merle Reskin Theater, 60 E. Balbo Drive. DOT director Harry Silverstein, who made his Lyric Opera main stage directorial debut with "La Traviata" in November, directs the production. Robert Kaminskas will conduct the DePaul Symphony Orchestra. Tickets are $15 for main floor and mezzanine and $10 for balcony seats. Discounts available for students, senior citizens, and others. Feb. 13, 8 p.m.: Trumpet player Nicholas Payton is the guest artist for the DePaul Jazz Ensemble’s sixth annual "Jazz is For Lovers" concert that celebrates Valentine’s Day at DePaul’s Merle Reskin Theater, 60 E. Balbo Drive. Bob Lark conducts the 18-member ensemble, which has recorded several CDs on the Reference Recordings label. Tickets are $20 for the main floor and mezzanine; balcony seats are $15. Feb. 26, 1999: New Music DePaul, the professional contemporary music series sponsored by DePaul’s School of Music, presents "A Moment in Eternity" for baritone and pianos by composer John Wallace. Free. Call 773/325-7260.

May 12, 8 p.m.: The DePaul Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Cliff Colnot, will present a spring concert benefitting the DePaul School of Music scholarship fund at Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Ave. The program includes: "Overture to the Barber of Seville" by Rosini; "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" by Vaughan Williams, "Sinfonietta I" by Pulitzer prize-winning composer and DePaul School of Music alumnus George Perle; and "Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47" by Shostakovich. May 14, 1999: New Music DePaul, the professional contemporary music series sponsored by DePaul’s School of Music, presents "Brief Encounters," a new string quartet work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer George Perle, a DePaul alumnus. Commissioned to celebrate DePaul’s centennial, Perle’s work will be performed by the Chicago String Quartet, in residence at DePaul’s School of Music: Joseph Genualdi, first violin, Stefan Hersh, second violin, Rami Solomonow, viola, and Christopher Costanza, cello.
