Ali Fatemi Appointed Chair of DePaul's Finance Department

Professor of Finance Ali Fatemi, 49, a resident of Chicago’s North Loop neighborhood, has been appointed chairman of the Finance Department of DePaul University’s College of Commerce and Kellstadt Graduate School of Business.

As department chairman, Fatemi said one of his goals is to form an advisory board of prominent finance leaders to help guide the direction of the department’s curricula and provide mentoring opportunities for students. He also has launched a finance research seminar series, sponsored by DePaul and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, in which nationally recognized finance scholars present their work.

Before joining DePaul’s faculty this fall, Fatemi was the Robert F. Hagans professor and head of the Department of Finance at Kansas State University from 1991 to 1998. At Kansas State, he also held positions as associate professor (1983-91), assistant professor (1980-83) and director of the MBA program (1984-87). He has had teaching assignments at Erasmus and Tilburg universities in the Netherlands, Justus Liebig and Johann Wolfgag Goethe universities in Germany and Czechoslovak Management Center in the Czech Republic. He has also been a visiting professor at Wichita State University, University of California, Los Angeles, and at the University of Maastricht, Netherlands.

Fatemi’s current research deals with issues related to the determinants of executive compensation, the value of voting rights in the German markets, and a clinical study of a large multinational firm.

He has been published in many leading domestic and international journals including Journal of Finance, Journal of Business Research, Global Finance Journal and the Pacific Basin Finance Journal.

Fatemi is a member of the editorial board and reviewer for a variety of domestic and international finance journals, including European Financial Management, Global Finance Journal, The International Journal of Finance and Managerial Finance. He is a member of the Board of Regents of the Institute of Management Accountants, and an executive committee member for the Global Finance Conference.

Professor Fatemi is a member of the Investment Advisory Committee of the Kansas State University Foundation, where he assists with asset allocation and performance evaluation for a $185 million portfolio. He is listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and the International Directory of Business Management Scholars and Research. He is a member of the Chicago Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute and the Executives Club of Chicago.

Fatemi received his doctoral degree in finance and his MBA from Oklahoma State University and his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Tehran Business College.
