Father & Son Make Teaching Law A Family Affair At DePaul

Jack Beermann remembers the time he helped his father, attorney Miles Beermann, win a motion in front of a difficult judge. Jack, who was all of six years old at the time, was with his father in court and suddenly found himself at the center of the judge's attention.

The judge had taken a liking to young Jack, and not only sat him on top of his bench, but granted Beermann the elder an unexpected, but welcomed, continuance in his case.

Father and son have shared a fascination with the legal profession ever since, and soon both will be working together at DePaul University's College of Law. Jack Beermann, now a professor at Boston University School of Law, and Miles Beermann, a noted family attorney and adjunct professor at DePaul, will be the first father and son pair to teach at DePaul's The College of Law is honored to claim Miles Beermann as an outstanding adjunct professor," said Teree Foster, dean of DePaul's College of Law.

Both students and faculty will benefit immeasurably from associating with both generations of Beermans.

Starting this fall, Miles will start his sixth year teaching family law at DePaul and Jack will take a one-semester break from Boston to teach civil rights and administrative law.

Although they won't be teaching in the same classroom, both Beermanns say they're looking forward to working together in the same environment.

"When I was growing up I thought I'd join him in his law practice" said Jack. "And now it will be really nice to be teaching with him at DePaul"

Miles said having Jack nearby will be an added bonus to a field he already enjoys. "Envy is a horrible thing, but I've always envied my kid since he started teaching," Miles said. "I personally get a tremendous amount of satisfaction from teaching"

Miles Beermann is a partner in the law firm Beermann, Swerdlove, Woloshin, Barezky, Becker, Genin & London, in Chicago, and was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1958, the same year Jack was born. He has appeared in every edition of "The Best Lawyers in America," and recently was included in North Shore Magazine's list of the top 20 divorce attorneys.

Jack Beermann has taught at Boston University's School of Law since 1984 and has made numerous presentations on civil rights law. He was a visiting scholar at Westfalische-Wilhelms Universität zu Münster in Münster, Germany in 1991. He worked as a law clerk for Judge Richard Cudahy of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit from 1983 to 1984.

Arthur Beermann, Miles' father, is an attorney as well and at 88 years old still practices. Miles' daughter, Barbara Beermann, is a prosecuting attorney in New York City and his brother, Jon Beermann, practices family law. Jack's wife, Debbie Korman, also is a lawyer.
