Noted DePaul Alumni to Become Phi Kappa Phi Members

Cook County Board President John Stroger and State Rep. Louis Lang (D-Ill.), both DePaul University College of Law graduates, will join the ranks of such notables as First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, former President Jimmy Carter and author Earnest Gaines, when they are inducted into the national honor society of Phi Kappa Phi. The ceremony will take place at 7 p.m.,Oct. 16 at the Cortelyou Commons, 2325 N. Fremont St.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded 100 years ago to recognize individuals from all disciplines who excel in scholarship, teaching or service. Headquartered at Louisiana State University, the organization has close to 300 chapters nationwide. The DePaul chapter, which was chartered in 1992, has earned a valued position within the national organization.

"The upcoming initiation will be a special occasion," said Daniel Koys, president of DePaul's Phi Kappa Phi chapter, associate dean of DePaul's College of Commerce and a Naperville resident. "Phi Kappa Phi is celebrating its centennial this year and the entire national board will attend our induction. It will mark the first time that the board has attended a local chapter induction since the early 1980s."

Stroger, a 1968 DePaul graduate, and Lang, a 1974 DePaul graduate, are two of some 150 distinguished DePaul students, alumni, faculty and staff, who will become Phi Kappa Phi members. The DePaul chapter currently includes more than 500 members.

DePaul's chapter officers include Margaret Oppenheimer, chair of the Economics department and a Glenview resident (president-elect); Kathleen Bode, a senior majoring in secondary education and a Park Ridge resident (vice president); Rosalee Wolfe, an associate professor in the College of Computer Science, Telecommunications and Information Systems and a Chicago resident(treasurer); Judith-Rae Ross, instructorial associate in the department of history and a Skokie resident(secretary), and Jeffrey Carlson, chair of the religious studies department and a Hazelcrest resident (member-at-large).
