DePaul Law Professor Named Vice President of Chicago Library System Board
Judith Gaskell, director of DePaul University's law library and an assistant law professor, has been elected vice president of the Chicago Library System (CLS) board of directors. As vice president, one of Gaskell's chief responsibilities will be to chair the system's strategic planning committee.
"I am pleased to take a positive role in helping to shape the future of CLS," said Gaskell, who has been a CLS board member since 1995. "As our society becomes more technologically advanced we want to ensure that CLS keeps pace with the increasing need to provide library users with rapid and accurate information, and useful services."
Established in 1990 as a part of the Illinois library system, CLS is a consortium of libraries in Chicago. It includes the Chicago Public Library, Chicago public and private school libraries, and libraries in universities, corporations, law firms, hospitals, museums and other institutions. CLS provides services that include automation assistance, a reference hotline and continuing education seminars. The 14-member CLS board is responsible for the fiscal management, policy development and strategic planning of the organization.
Gaskell, who lives in Chesterton,Ind., has been director of DePaul's law library since 1983. Prior to joining DePaul she worked as a reference librarian and the head of reader services at the University of Chicago Law Library. Gaskell has also worked as a law librarian at the law firm of Sonnenschein, Carlin, Nath & Rosenthal. She received a bachelor's in English from Carleton College in 1967, a master's in library science from the University of Chicago in 1975 and a law degree from DePaul College of Law in 1980. She will serve as vice president of the CLS board until June 1998.
