Classroom Computing and UNIX Computer Fees Policy

Purpose
To allocate a portion of the cost of the computer classrooms and the Hawk (UNIX) system to students who are the primary users of this equipment.

Scope

Policy
With the approval of the Strategic Resource Allocation Committee, two computer fees have been implemented to allocate a portion of the cost of the computer classrooms and the Hawk/UNIX system to students who are the primary users of this equipment. A memo explaining the purpose and implementation of the fees was sent from the office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs to all deans and faculty members in January, 1995.

UNIX Computing Fee & Account Policies
A fee of $25 will be assessed to each student attending a course that requires a Hawk or Oracle account. The faculty member can request that students are automatically assessed a computer fee if all students in the class require a UNIX or Oracle account, or the faculty member can decide to request a UNIX or Oracle account for select students within the course with each student being responsible for paying $25 for the computer account. The faculty member must request these accounts using the Hawk account request form.

Condor accounts for graduate assistants receiving a stipend from the university are created at no additional cost if the account is used for the specific purpose of assisting faculty in research and instructional activities. A Condor account for graduate assistants is requested by filling out and submitting the Graduate Assistant/Student Grader Account form. All graduate assistant accounts will expire at the end of the academic quarter. An account can be renewed prior to the end of an academic quarter. Only one account can be requested per graduate assistant per quarter. All graduate assistant accounts requests will be verified with the requesting faculty member prior to account creation.

Hawk Account Extensions
Computer accounts are active for the entire academic quarter. All computer accounts will expire at midnight on the last day of finals unless a Hawk account extension form is turned into Identification Card Services no later than three business days before the last day of finals. Only one account extension will be granted per student per course. The account extension cannot be more than 10 weeks in length.

Fee Refunds
If a student drops the course before the end of the second week of the quarter and the student was assessed a PC classroom fee or a PC computing fee for the course, the fee will be reimbursed to the student. The reimbursement is automatically credited to the student's account after dropping the course.
